DESCRIPTION:The Lecha Dodi piyyut marks a profound exception in the history
  of Jewish liturgy. Though originated in the early modern era\, in a uniqu
 e kabbalistic environment it (and the surrounding ceremony of receiving th
 e Shabbat) was accepted by all Jewish streams--Sephardi and Ashkenazi\, Or
 thodox\, Conservative\, and Reform--as if it had forever been an inherent 
 part of the Tefillah. Even in secular circles in Israel\, one might hear t
 he melodies of this piyyut. We will review its biblical origins\, visit th
 e fluidic identities of the "she" (and to a certain extent the "he")\, and
  ask about the religious-spiritual quality of the piyyut.
